Weather
All this actually started with wanting a temperature sensor
for the basement where I keep my servers. I spent some time
searching for sensors and the hardware and linux software to
monitor it. What I found was either expensive, or very DIY.
Eventually I discovered the
Dallas
Semiconductor's 1-Wire Weather Station
Linux Weather Software Roundup
Of course, I need software to run it.
- Digitemp
- For plain old temperature readings
-
One Wire Weather software.
- This is a gtk/glade based application that handles the OWW
station, the rain guage and up to 8 temperature and humidity
sensors. It will feed data into
Dallas WeatherServer
Weather Underground and
HamWeather
It's got a non-gui version hacked into it, but it could use
a rewrite to split it into a client/server (plus a lot of
documentation).
- One Wire Information Server.
- This is also a new project starting on Sourceforge. It
seems to be stillborn
- PyOneWire A Python module to access the Dallas One-Wire network via a serial port adapter
- Jupiter One Wire Weather Server
Planned additions
Hub
Some smart cookies on the weather mailing list have designed a
SIMAT iButton
1-Wire Hub
to provide power and isolate the legs of a large 1-wire
network.
Unfortuately, unlike when I was a kid and electronics
were nice and big and easy to assemble, everything us surface
mount these days. Here's a decent guide to soldering this stuff:

More Temperature Sensors
I want to drop one in my pond, the garage, my server room, and
one in the main house.
I'm not the first one to drop a sensor in the pond.
Check
this out.
To waterproof it, just solder the sensor to the end of the
telephone cable, coat it with silicon goo, and finish it off
with some heatshrink tubing.
Humidity Sensor
Dallas is working on a
hygro I-button,
that combines temperature, humidity, and light level. You can
order an evaluation kit, ADI400-EVM, by contacting the
customer
service department.
GPS
Picked up some recievers super cheap.. A good time source. They
do, however, need an active antenna...
